HPREP is supported by the UCSD chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). The Student National Medical Association is a branch of the National Medical Association (NMA), the physician led organization created during the Jim Crow Era to promote the collective interests of black physicians and patients. The goals of the UCSD SNMA chapter are as follows:
|
Established in 2016
Health Professions Recruitment & Exposure Program (HPREP) was started at UCSD School of Medicine by SNMA members in 2016 in order to help close the education gap created by systemic disparities. UCSD HPREP, then and now, provides educational and social support to students from opportunity poor neighborhoods.
Program Overview
- There are no application or participation fees associated with HPREP.
- During the school year, participants will attend eight, half-day Saturday morning sessions, held once per month at UC San Diego School of Medicine. These events will fun and stimulating, with a combination of lectures, small-group activities, and mock patient encounters. The activities are adapted from UC San Diego’s real medical school curriculum and closely mimic the medical student experience. There will be no homework between sessions.
- Each participant will be formally connected to a mentorship team consisting of a pre-medical student, a medical student, a resident physician, and a senior attending physician. Members of this team will be in frequent contact with the participant throughout the year to answer questions and provide guidance related to challenges the participant may face over time (e.g. how to do excel in Advanced Placement courses, applying to college, and managing stress).
